Fonseca CXX Anniversary

Arriving late to the party, Cigar Weekly nonetheless wishes to celebrate and bring to readers a glimpse of the offering recently released by the talented Quesada family. While their newer, self-named Quesada lines have been huge hits, over the last two years, father Manuel Quesada has been in this business a long time, and has brought to the United States market the Fonseca.

The Fonseca is a well established marque in Cuba as well, and the Quesadas are celebrating the 120th year of Fonseca, commemorating that founding in 1891 with a new, Anniversary cigar this Spring. The new cigar, the Fonseca CXX Anniversary has been made and distributed in quite a limited run of production, only 120,000 cigars. From SAG Imports' own website:

In the year 1891, a Cuban by the name of Don Fonseca gave his name to the delicious cigars he manufactured and the Fonseca brand was born. Over the past 120 years, a period spaning the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, Fonseca has become a world re-knowned brand. In celebration of this important moment in the history of Fonseca, we will be releasing 120,000 cigars in three different sizes.

As we have come to expect, this cigar, like other recent offerings from Quesada and S.A.G., is a true family collaboration. The blend was created after much consultation and testing among the members of the family. That blend contains Cuban-seed Dominican and Nicaraguan filler, Cuban-seed Dominican binder and is wrapped with "Habano Vuelta Arriba from a microfarm in the Navarrete region that has been sungrown to create a richer, more intense tobacco."  According to the website, the Fonseca CXX is intended to be a medium-bodied cigar. And in true Cuban style, they have kept the ring gauges for the longer two vitolas on the thinner side, countering more recent trends in the U.S. market. The gordo, however, is right within this current of burgeoning cigars topping the 60 ring gauge threshold with this short fat cigar.
